National preparedness is no longer a matter for defence alone, it’s a cross-sector responsibility that touches every part of UK Plc.

In today’s volatile world, the UK’s ability to anticipate, adapt to, and recover from disruption, whether environmental, geopolitical, technological or infrastructural, has become central to its long-term prosperity.

As set out in the National Resilience Framework and Integrated Review, national preparedness is about more than reacting to emergencies. Its about ensuring the systems we all rely on, transport, energy, supply chain, and digital infrastructure are resiliant, secure and future ready.

I’d love to see the Strategic Defence Review panel help inform and accelerate the aims of the Strategic Rail Review by demonstrating how defence-led innovation and collaboration can support wider national preparedness across critical infrastructure. Transport routes are the arteries of our economy.

August 2025

The UK’s long awaited 2025 Strategic Defence Review sets out the most significant transformation of the British Armed Forces in a generation. It calls for a fundamental leap in readiness, resilience and technological edge to meet the demands of a more dangerous and volatile world.

The UK has a remarkable and disproportionate legacy of breakthrough innovation across multiple centuries. From radar and jet propulsion to Bletchley Park and the World Wide Web, our history is filled with bold ideas that changed the course of conflicts, and of history.

That tradition continues today. The UK consistantly punches above its weight in research, creativity, and invention, often more agile, interdisciplinary, and systemically inventive than much larger economies. But while innovation is in our DNA, commercialisation and scale-up remain persistant challenges.
